Lucy Ball
Student Counsellor
Lucy is a trainee counsellor in her second year of a bachelor’s degree in Counselling and Addiction Studies. She’s also a wife, a mum to a three-year-old and a trans woman. She’s a sober alcoholic with nine years of recovery. Her training so far has been in client-centred practice (sometimes called person-centred therapy), which emphasises collaboration and exploration. She’s curious, empathetic and gentle, and enjoys walking alongside clients, rather than pushing or leading.
During her study this year, Lucy hopes to grow her understanding of harm-reduction-informed addiction practice and trauma-informed practice, as well as working with couples. She’s also excited to build on her knowledge of tikanga and reo Māori. She is sex-positive, body-positive and responsive to the needs of neurodiverse clients.
In her personal life, Lucy enjoys cooking and walking in the bush around Pōneke. She tries to get into the ocean as often as possible. When she goes out for coffee she orders a flat white (blue top) and a cheese scone.
