Art Therapy with a Student Counsellor
Creative therapy when talking feels hard
Art therapy is a form of counselling that uses creative processes such as drawing, painting, or making to support emotional expression and healing.
You don’t need to be “good at art”. The focus is on the process, not the outcome.
How art therapy works
-
Art therapy can help people:
-
express feelings that are hard to put into words
-
process experiences safely and gently
-
regulate emotions and reduce overwhelm
-
explore identity and sense of self
-
build insight through creative reflection
The therapist supports you in reflecting on what emerges and connecting it to your emotional and life experiences.
Art therapy can support:
-
emotional regulation
-
trauma and grief processing
-
identity and self‑expression
-
stress and overwhelm
-
children, young people, and adults who struggle to talk about feelings
Important note: art therapy is provided by a student
At Kōwhai, art therapy is offered by student art therapists.
This means:
-
sessions are lower‑cost and more accessible
-
student art therapists work within their training scope
-
all work is closely supervised by experienced clinicians
This model ensures care is safe, ethical, and well supported.
