If you’re thinking about starting counselling but wondering how much it costs, you’re not alone.

One of the most common questions people ask is: “How much is counselling in NZ?” This blog

breaks down what influences the cost, different types of funding, and how you can access help, even if you're on a tight budget.

Why Are Counselling Costs So Different?

Counselling prices can vary quite a bit depending on a few things, who you see, where you

go, and how the service is funded. Some sessions are completely free, some are subsidised,

and others are private and charged at full cost.

Let’s look at the different options.

Public, Subsidised & Funded Counselling

Partially or Fully Funded Services

In New Zealand, some counselling services are funded or partially subsidised through

government programmes, charitable organisations, or helplines. These services may offer:

● Free peer support or group sessions

● Helpline or phone support at no cost

● Reduced fees with student counsellors or interns

Some organisations also provide online or phone options if attending in person is difficult —

sometimes even on short notice.

Government-Funded Support (e.g. ACC, WINZ)

If you’ve experienced injury or trauma, or you're facing financial hardship, you may be eligible

for support through:

● ACC: For those impacted by physical injury or sensitive claims (like trauma or abuse)

● WINZ (Work and Income): Support may be available if your wellbeing affects your

ability to work or study

These services usually cover a standard hourly rate, and your counsellor will guide you through

the referral process if they’re registered to provide this support.

Private Counselling Costs

Private clinics often charge higher rates. This is because their services aren’t funded and they

cover all costs themselves.

The price can depend on:

● The counsellor’s experience

● The length and type of session (e.g. couples, emergency, or extended sessions)

● Location and whether the session is in-person or online

Some practices offer packages, flexible payment options, or can help with funding applications.

It’s always worth asking.

Ways to Make Counselling More Affordable

Ask about student or intern counsellors – they offer great support at a lower cost

Explore funding options – like ACC or WINZ, especially if you're dealing with trauma

or life challenges

Check if your employer offers EAP – some workplaces cover counselling

Look into packages or sliding scale options – many providers are open to discussing

this

Use free tools first – like helplines, support groups, or online resources
