Preparing for Your First Counselling Session

Your first counselling session can feel like a big step, and coming prepared can make it less overwhelming and more productive. At KTS, we encourage you to take some time before your session to think about what you want to achieve. Setting an agenda can help ensure that your most important concerns are addressed.

How to Prepare:

  1. Set the Agenda: When we’re stressed or anxious, it’s easy to get lost in conversation and forget

Key points we wanted to raise. Creating a list or writing in a journal before your session can be incredibly helpful. Consider including:

    • Main Concerns: What are the primary issues that brought you to counselling? Whether it’s anxiety, relationship challenges, or past trauma, identifying the main focus can help structure the session.

    • Recent Thoughts or Conflicts: Have there been any recent situations, arguments, or thoughts that have been particularly troubling? Writing these down, with as much detail as you can, gives us a clear picture of what’s currently impacting you.

    • Questions or Goals: Do you have specific questions you want to explore or goals you hope to achieve through counselling? Clarifying these can give us direction and help tailor the sessions to your needs.

  2. Bring Your Notes: Bringing these notes with you helps us get to the heart of what’s important more quickly. At KTS, we appreciate a good list or journal entry—it gives us a starting point and allows us to dive into the work right away

Remember, the first session is also about building rapport and trust, so while preparation is helpful, there’s no pressure to have everything perfectly laid out. The goal is to make sure your voice is heard and that the session reflects your priorities.
